Web3 journey - Web3(Crypto) Overview(Frontend Perspective)

I want to write a series of articles about Web3 frontend development to document my journey so far. However, finding time for this has been challenging due to work commitments, learning English (and, of course, playing video games and reading). To make the most of my time, I’ve decided to write these articles in English, which will also help me practice my English writing skills. If time permits in the future, I might write some articles about AI(recently in research).

Now, let’s get to the point.

At first, I don’t want to dive too deeply into the topic. If you’re looking for a comprehensive understanding of Web3 or blockchain, I recommend exploring dedicated learning platforms or reading books on the subject (feel free to PM me for recommendations).

What is web3?

For frontend developers, Web3 introduces a new interaction layer: the blockchain. This means you’ll need to learn the following:

  • how to interact with a blockchain?
  • how to call a smart contract function?
  • how to connect a wallet?
  • how to interact with an api server for GraphQL?
  • Solidity fundamentals (you need to be able to read smart contract code to debug issues).
  • Novel concepts like Wallet, Token, NFT, DeFi, etc.
  • JavaScript libraries related to Web3.
  • And more…

Why Join the Web3 (Crypto) Industry?

I’ve spoken with several developers, and here are some common reasons they shared for joining the Web3 industry:

  • Distributed/Remote Work: Many Web3 companies offer remote work opportunities.
  • Extra Income: Earning digital currency in addition to salary.
  • Future Prospects: Many believe Web3 has significant growth potential (though opinions vary).
  • And more…

Let’s break down the pros and cons of working in Web3.

Advantage

Distributed Work/Remote Work Web3 offers numerous remote job opportunities, but this isn’t universal. For example, many Web3 companies in China still require employees to work in-office. Whether you can work remotely depends on your skills and the company you choose. If your English speaking and listening skills are strong, you might even land a job with an overseas company.

Extra income This depends on the company’s business model. If the company issues valuable tokens, you might receive them as part of your compensation, either monthly or at regular intervals.

Future Prospects In China, the future of Web3 is still uncertain. However, if you’re open to working overseas, Web3 could be a promising field. While I can’t predict the future, I see it as an opportunity to be closer to the financial industry.

Disadvantage

Regulatory issues In China, certain Web3 activities, such as ICOs, cryptocurrency trading, NFT trading, and cryptocurrency mining, are illegal.

Crypto-to-Fiat Conversion This topic is sensitive and not open for discussion in certain regions.

That’s all for now. In the next article, I’ll start discussing Ethers.js.
