汉语说“年轻一代”“老一代”等，没有比较意味，但说成英语分别是 the younger generation, the older generation，这些表达习惯上要用比较级，不能用原级。又如：
Many representatives of the older generation were there. 老一辈的各类人都在那里。
The younger generation only seems to be interested in pop music. 年轻一代似乎只对流行音乐感兴趣。
I feel pretty old when I see how the younger generation behaves. 看到年轻一代的举止行为，我觉得我太老了。
The generation gap is difficult for both the younger and the older generations. 代沟使青老两代人感到别扭。
The older generation prefer a darker and more traditional kind of clothing. 老一辈人喜欢颜色深一些、传统一些的衣服。
类似的表达还有“高等教育”，它说成英语是 higher education, 而不能是 higheducation。如：
I wish to have the chance to receive a higher education. 我希望能有机会接受高等教育。
Higher education is relatively autonomous from the state. 高等教育相对来说不受国家控制。
These changes will shift the balance in higher education more towards science subjects. 这些变化将使高等教育的天秤向理科倾斜。
Access to higher education has been unduly restricted for people with disabilities. 残疾人接受高等教育的机会受到了过度的限制。
