单词“serif”的词源不可考，大致和拉丁文字形成字体风格同时产生。1813年，William Hollins 在英国的国家标准中，统一了英语大写字母表和罗马字母表 I。他定义了术语“surripses”，通常发音为“surriphs”，意思是“在除了字母 O 和 Q 之外，在字母笔画的头和尾出现的突出部分，有时在笔画的起始，有时在结尾，有时同时出现”。 这个标准同时也指出，单词“surripses”可能源自希腊单词 συν（在一起）和 ριψισ (突出的部分)的组合。1827年，一个希腊学者 Julian Hibbert 印制了他自己的实验性质的安塞儿大写希腊字体。他认为碑文字母的衬线，与其说是一种装饰，更像是随着自然老化而形成的磨损。他还认为，“serif”的词源应该是“syrifs”或者“cerefs”。
