Can you still brag about having submitted your first app to the App Store for review? Well with the help of my good friend from Qrayon[1] I DID IT!! And thought I’d share a little story.
It’s been 2 years since the first design was conceived and the last thing I did before submission — the only thing I had to pull an all-nighter for until now — was trying to create an App Preview! I’m not kidding!
(App Preview is basically the video you can watch along with screenshots in the App Store.)
Creating the App Preview is theoretically fairly simple but all the trouble came when I wanted to add music to my App Preview…. Long-story-short here’s what you do:

Step1 — Recording via QuickTime
。Plug in your iPhone to the Mac
。Open up QuickTime
。File > New Movie Recording
。Select iPhone as the source
。Set audio source to iPhone if you want to record the app audio
。Record!
NOTES
。The recording matches your phone’s resolution so iPhone6 = 750x1334. If you want an App Preview for iPhone6+ but don’t have to a 6+ we’ll get into it later
。For some reason my QuickTime was recording at 50fps sometimes, causing upload to fail later on so make sure to check by opening the recorded movie and [⌘+i] to inspect
。PS. If you like my awesome background just email me I’m happy to share, but it’s not my art work FYI
Lots of blogs will tell you “just use iMovie to edit your App Preview” — but what they don’t tell you is that in order to create a New App Preview you have to ignore the shitty [+] button (right side below) and use the File menu instead. I hate all the hours I wasted not realizing this.
Now you can add audio, add fade, and whatever the heck you want then export it and upload it to iTunesConnect.
I’m sure there’s probably easier ways (please do comment and share) but this is how I did it:
。Do Step1, and Step2 except — at
Step2 just create a regular movie with no themes
。Import the recording, and use the crop tool to rotate your video so it
fits horizontally (assuming your recording was vertical like my)
。Export as 1920x1080
。Use this free online tool to rotate it back to vertical
。Happy uploading!
You can simply download the awesome TechSmit AppShow that’s completely freeand it’ll guide you through recording or importing videos, trimming, add even adding narration and music! WHY DIDN’T I FIND THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Note though — AppShow turned some of my app’s colors neon after recording so I couldn’t use it in the end, and the frame rates can drop occasionally. Happy creating App Previews!
