  • The Moon over the River on a Spring Night
    【唐】张若虚
The spring river tide surges mightily, merging seamlessly with the sea; A bright full moon, rising from the sea, seems to emerge with river tide.
Moonlight bathes the spring river, shimmering across waves for a thousand miles; And everywhere there was spring river, there was luminous moonlight.
The river winds its twisting course through fields lush with flowers and grass, while moonlight falls on the blossoming woods, glinting like fine snowflakes.
The moon's radiance is so similar to frost that the flickering frost is hardly perceivable; The white sand on the sandbar is seamlessly mingled with the radiance of moonlight, dim.
The river and the sky become indistinguishable without any tiny dust, and there is only a solitary moon hanging in the luminous sky.
What people originally saw the moon out of the river? And at what year did the moon on the river initially shimmer at the people?
Life goes on from generation to generation but the moon on the river always looks the same from year to year.
We don't know who the moon is waiting for; But we see the yangtze River goes on and on.
Like a lone cloud, the wanderer drifts away, leaving his love by the maple-darkened bay, her sorrow as deep as the tide at day's end.
Whose wandering son floats tonight in a lonely boat? Where, on a moonlit tower, does someone pine with longing?
The pitiful moonlight, restless on the high floor, must now be shining on her dressing table.
The moonlight, shining on her curtains, can not be shrugged off, and shining on her laundry-pounding block, can not be whisked off.
Now we gaze at the same moon but hear no echoes, I long to ride its light to where you rest.
Wild geese fly endlessly, yet never beyond the boundless moonlight; beneath that glow, scaled creatures breach, shattering the river's skin.
I dreamed falling flowers drifting down to the leisurely pool last night, but what's pitiful is that I can't go back home though the spring had passed over half.
The river is going to run out along with spring radiance, the moon on the pool is going to down to the west, again.
The slanting moon sinks slowly, swallowed by sea-mist; how vast the gulf between north and south, between those who leave.
Who can ride this moonlight home? Only the westward-dipping moon, swinging farewells, drenches the riverside woods in its parting light.

  • The Moon over the River on a Spring Night
    【唐】张若虚
The vernal river swells with mighty tides, blending with the sea in seamless grace; The bright full moon, rises from the sea, as if born with the river tide.
Moonlight spreads over the vernal stream, a thousand miles of rippling gleam; And wherever the spring river flows, the luminous moonlight follows.
The river meanders through fields lush with flowers and grass, while moonlight falls on the blossoming woods, glinting like hoarfrost.
The moon's radiance blend with frost indistinguishable in their glow; The white sand on the sandbar dissolves into the radiance of moonlight, a haze of silver.
The river and the sky merge into one hue without any tiny dust, and there is only a solitary moon hanging in the luminous sky.
Who was the first to see the moon out of the river? And at what year did the moon on the river first grace humankind?
Life goes on from generation to generation but the moon on the river always looks the same from year to year.
We don't know who the moon awaits; But we see the yangtze River goes on and on.
Like a lone cloud, the wanderer drifts away, leaving his love by the maple-shaded bay, her sorrow as deep as the tide at day's end.
Whose wandering son floats tonight in a lonely boat? Where, on a moonlit tower, does someone pine with longing?
The melancholy moonlight, restless on the high floor, must now be shining upon her dressing mirror.
The moonlight, shining on her curtains, can not be shrugged off, and shining on her laundry-pounding block, can not be whisked off.
Now we gaze at the same moon but cannot hear each other, I long to ride its light to where you abode.
Wild geese fly far yet never beyond the boundless moonlight; beneath that glow, fish-dragons leap, weaving watery patterns.
I dreamed of flowers falling into the tranquil pool last night, yet pitifully, as mid-spring comes, I still cannot return home.
The river is going to flow away bearing spring's glow, the moon over the pool sinks west again.
The slanting moon sinks slowly, swallowed by sea-mist; how vast the gulf between north and south, between those who leave.
Who can follow this moonlight home? Only the westward-dipping moon, swinging farewells, drenches the riverside woods in its parting light.

  • The Moon over the River on a Spring Night
    【唐】张若虚
In spring the river rises as high as the sea, And with the river's tide uprises the moon bright.
She follows the rolling waves for ten thousand li; Where'er the river flows, there overflows her light.
The river winds around the fragrant islet where The blooming flowers in her light all look like snow.
You cannot tell her beams from hoar frost in the air, Nor from white sand upon Farewell Beach below.
No dust has stained the water blending with the skies; A lonely wheel-like moon shines brilliant far and wide.
Who by the riverside did first see the moon rise? When did the moon first see a man by riverside?
Many generations have come and passed away; From year to year the moons look alike, old and new.
We do not know tonight for whom she sheds her way, But hear the river say to its water adieu.
Away, away is sailing a single cloud white; On Farewell Beach are pining away maples green.
Where is the wanderer sailing his boat tonight? Who, pining away, on the moonlit rails would lean?
Alas! The moon is lingering over the tower; It should have seen her dressing table all alone.
She may roll curtains up, but light is in her bower; She may wash, but moonbeams still remain on the stone.
She sees the moon, but her husband is out of sight; She would follow the moonbeams to shine on his face.
But message-bearing swans can't fly out of moonlight, Nor letter-sending fish can leap out of their place.
He dreamed of flowers falling o'er the pool last night; Alas! Spring has half gone, but he can't homeward go.
The water bearing spring will run away in flight; The moon over the pool will sink low.
In the mist on the sea the slanting moon will hide; It's a long way from northern hills to southern streams.
How many can go home by moonlit on the tide? The setting moon sheds o'er riverside trees but dreams.
